Project Overview

The Aurora Cultural Centre needed a completely new website and events hub to complement their newly renovated physical space. The previous website lacked modern functionality, accessibility, and the ability to handle events and ticket sales efficiently. As the sole designer on the project, I built the entire website from scratch using a CMS and created an easy-to-use events management system to simplify ticket sales for the organization and its patrons.

Full site architecture planning, page layout design, event system integration, responsive refinement, accessibility consideration, stakeholder collaboration, and end-to-end WordPress build and launch.

Challenges

The primary challenge was developing a fully functional event listing and ticketing system that was intuitive for both staff and visitors. Many of the team members had never used a CMS before, so the system needed to be designed in a way that was easy to navigate and update.

Additionally, the site needed to be fully responsive and accessible, accommodating the diverse audience of the cultural centre, including seniors and community members with varying levels of digital literacy.

Solution

To ensure the website met both functional and accessibility needs, I:

Built a modern, user-friendly website from the ground up, optimizing it for clarity and ease of use.
Developed a fully integrated events & booking system, allowing for seamless event management.
Created an intuitive CMS workflow, ensuring that even non-technical users could update event listings without difficulty.
Prioritized accessibility, implementing high-contrast designs, readable fonts, and clear navigation paths

Process

Discovery & Planning – Identified key requirements for event management, accessibility, and ease of use.
Wireframing & UX Design – Designed an intuitive layout that prioritized navigation and engagement.
Development & Integration – Built the site with a custom CMS, ensuring staff could easily update content.
User Testing & Training – Conducted extensive testing on different devices and trained staff on CMS operations.

Results

The new website launched to overwhelming applause and gratitude from the cultural centre’s staff and patrons. The event listing hub streamlined event management, making it significantly easier for visitors to explore and book activities.

The website now provides a seamless experience, rivalling the centre’s stunning physical renovations and making the arts and culture scene more accessible to the local community.

The Aurora Cultural Centre’s website required not just a design refresh, but an entire functional overhaul. The previous site was difficult to update, and staff struggled with managing event information effectively.

One of the most challenging aspects was building an events and booking system from scratch, ensuring that it:

The final result was a beautiful, fully functional website that enhanced the centre’s digital presence, making it easier than ever for the community to discover and engage with cultural events.
